What’s Not to Love? Trader Joe’s

May 19, 2011

I love Trader Joe’s. I mean it. I LOVE Trader Joe’s. I love their selection, their quality, and I love the quirky people that work there. I just spent ten minutes with their sommelier who had nothing better to do than show me his favorite wines under $10 (will share findings in a future post, I promise!). I love their end-cap displays and I usually buy what’s on them. I love their compelling in-store signage and I love the Fearless Flyer. It makes me hungry, every time.

Since it’s been a while since I’ve gushed about my latest faves on a Friday, here’s a short list of the many from TJ’s:

Gummy Bears and Gummy Tummies

Trader Joe’s gummy bears. We are using them as potty bribes, but somehow I’m eating as many as he is. No artificial flavors or colors (there’s way too much FD&C in the world already) and they taste SO MUCH better than the “real” thing.

Ready-To-Go-Salads

My work-a-day lunchtime staple. Today I’m noshing on Crunchy Slaw with Chicken, Crispy Noodles and Peanut Dressing. Other faves: Field fresh Chopped Chicken Salad w/currents, cous cous and pecans and a creamy basil deressing, and Whole-Grain Country Salad. A whole lotta yummy for around $4.

Gingerbread Mix

Holiday staple – super spicy!

Pinot Grigio Vivace

Pair it with lamb, lemon, yogurt – perfect for Greek far and only $4.99 a bottle. And did I mention? It’s bubbly.

Joe-Joe’s

I normally don’t buy these Oreo knock-off’s (trade-up’s, more like it) but at the holidays I picked up a package of White Chocolate Covered Gingersnap Joe Joe’s. (Yes, I’m serious.) Need I say more?

Edamame (Steamed Soy Beans)

Frozen, hulled, I always buy two bags at a time. When it’s a busy weeknight and I need a token green vegetable – far healthier than frozen peas or canned anything, I feel good, and the boys are happy.

Roasted Fresh Corn

This stuff makes my Tortilla Soup taste awesome, is great in chili, tacos and anything you want to kick up with some smoky goodness. In the freezer section.

Sauces and Stuff

From the Soy-Vey Island Teriyaki to the many varieties of ethnic sauces like Moroccan Tangine Simmer Sauce, Thai Green Curry, Mojito Simmer Sauce and Indian Masala – have chicken (or shrimp or whatever), have sauce, have dinner in 30 minutes. It’s so simple and so easy. Want someone else’s opinion? Here’s a whole page of ’em.

All that being said…what’s not to love about Trader Joe’s? Not much.

Trader Joe’s also has organic chocolate which is Fair Trade chocolate. You will be hearing more about this as several kids in our youth group have decided to join this cause. Hersheys, Mars, Nestles Sees, and many, many others buy their cocoa from companies where they bring in child slaves to work their factories. Trader Joe’s organic chocolate is not only Fair Trade chocolate but is also reasonable priced. Just another reason to love Trader Joe’s!!

You listed my favorite salads! I’ve got two to add: love their roasted beet with chicken and balsamic dressing, and LOVE the citrus chicken salad, with dressing it’s under 250 cals. And their Midnight Mop chocolate sauce, my coffee cart staple…and their pre-marinated pork loin…and their multi-grain verge lasagna…and their margarita mix…yes, I’m hungry, can you tell?
