I Heart Autumn

September 1, 2011

The Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte is back.

Does that mean it’s ok to  legitimately bring out the Halloween and fall decorations? ‘Cause I’m hankering after my goofy little scarecrows and silly ghouls.

I normally avoid knick-knacks and kitsch in my house. My decor usually consists of arrangements of large, funky fases and fresh flowers. I don’t dig a cluttered surface.

With one exception. Ok, two. Fall and Winter. Maybe it’s the colors – cause I wear them so well – like brown and orange and red and teal. Maybe it’s just that after a season of travel and wandering, I’m ready to hunker down by the fireplace and feel homey. And a happy little ghostie on the mantelpiece just makes it that much more so!

And then, there’s Christmas…I have an entire blog category on Christmas I love it so much!

So here we are on the first of September, just before Labor Day and the summer is officially wrapping up in most parts of the world.

Except where I live. See, we’re a coastal climate out here, and that means a wet spring, cool summer, no winter to speak of and…a really hot fall. It’s not uncommon for it to be 90 on Halloween. (Ok, ok, don’t shoot – I know that “90” isn’t really considered hot anymore, not by the standards most of America has been facing all summer. But for us it is. We pay these real estate prices for a REASON people. Enjoy that $250,000 palace and crank up the AC.)

Which is a bit of a downer in the “cozy” category. Not exactly what I’m in the mood for. I want candles and fireplaces, not swimming pools!

The leaves will finally start turning around Thanksgiving, and a true Autumn will take place right as we’re dreaming of a white Christmas.

I love California anyway. I may be in shorts, but my windowsills will be full of candles and goblins and ghoulies!

Happy first day of September!

Love it! I was thinking you probably love fall because the colors match your wardrobe, and then you said the same! Made me laugh. I agree though, September seems way too early for the pumpkin spice latte because it’s just NOW getting hot enough for iced coffee! By the time it’s cool enough for warm drinks again, pumpkin spice will give way to gingerbread lattes. We had such a cold summer that the warm weather is just starting! (Not that I’m complaining.) Enjoy your decorating for Fall!

I love comments! Go ahead. Give me a piece of your mind.
