A Perfect Day
Smells full of promise: sunscreen and barbecue smoke
Sprinklers splashing, little boys laughing
Beach towel mummies baking in the sun.
Trees blooming, roses looming, all is lush and lovely.
Dinner al fresco; flies in the wine.
Days stretching longer, is it bedtime already?
Freshly turned soil; seedlings in the sun.
The promise of goodness to come.
Vine-ripe tomatoes and sweet Persian cukes.
Fresh basil and parsley and sage.
Rain in the forecast, but we are content.
It was a perfect day.
California, you make me crazy with your politics –
But I love you anyway.
