Recipe: Zombie Barf (Green Smoothies)
Two weeks ago the Gabe and I took a “10 Day Challenge” to eat more raw, fresh food, and eliminate refined and processed foods, meat, dairy and gluten from our diet. The end goal being energy, not fitness. We were all for it, in our sluggish state and I must say, it works. While I’m not bouncing off the walls, I do feel better. When we cheat, we feel worse. While I won’t be giving up cheese for the rest of my life, I can live pretty happily (and less hungrily) this way most of the time.
The best part of our dietary change has been our morning smoothie – a derivation from good ol’ Dr. Oz, and which my five year old, when asked what I should call it, quipped without batting an eyelash: “Zombie Barf.”
Ok, so it kind of does look weird, but it’s a gingery, parsleyed goodness that really is a great way to start the day (once you get past the green part). I’ve been asked for the recipe several times in the last weeks – some I’m sure with nothing but polite intrest (and internal disgust), but here it is regardless. Drink and feel healthy – it’s a heck of a lot faster way to ingest salad!
2 cups spinach
1/2 head of celery
1/2 inch or teaspoon grated ginger
1 bunch parsley
1 apple (Fuji or Gala)
A few chunks of pineapple
Juice of 1 lime
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Combine all ingredients in a blender. 2-3 servings.
